Summary
Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, from Safwan ibn Abdallah ibn Safwan, that Safwan ibn Umayya (may God be pleased with him) was told: whoever does not emigrate is destroyed. He came to Medina and slept in the mosque, using his cloak as a pillow. A thief came and took his cloak. Safwan seized the thief and brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who ordered his hand cut off. Safwan said: Messenger of God, I did not want this; it is a charity for him. The Prophet said: why did you not do that before you brought him to me? The editor notes that Shababa ibn Sawwar connected it through Abdallah ibn Safwan, while Malik's companions transmitted it from him as mursal, so Shababa may have erred. 1
