Summary
It reached Malik that a man wrote from Iraq to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) that he had told his wife: your reins are on your back, a formula of divorce. Umar wrote to his governor to send the man to him in Mecca in the season. As Umar was circling the House, the man met him and greeted him. Umar asked who he was; he said he was the one Umar had ordered brought. Umar asked him, by the Lord of this House, what he meant by his words; he said that if Umar had appointed him anywhere else he would not have believed him, and that he meant separation. Umar said: then it is what you meant. 1
