«صلاة الليل مثنى مثنى، فإذا خشي أحدكم الصبح صلى ركعة واحدة توتر له ما قد صلى»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on the command to pray the witr. Yahya transmits from Malik from Nafi' and Abdullah ibn Dinar from Abdullah ibn Umar: a man asked the Prophet ﷺ about night prayer. He said it is in pairs, and if one of you fears dawn, he should pray one rak'a as the witr for what he has prayed. The editor notes that the transmitters from Malik agree on its wording except al-Haniyni, who added "and day", which was an error; al-Haniyni is weak and often mistaken. The editor cites al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, al-Shafi'i and al-Bayhaqi, and refers to al-Tamhid. 1 2
