Overview

Al-Baladhuri relates the account of the stipend of Zaynab bint Jahsh from Umar ibn al-Khattab. 1

The report

When the stipend was distributed, Umar sent to Zaynab her share. She said that others of her sisters were stronger than she was in dividing it, and she covered herself with a cloth, and ordered that it be poured out and a cloth thrown over it. She then ordered Barza bint Rafi' to take a handful of it and go with it to her relatives and orphans. Five hundred and eighty dirhams remained under the cloth. Then she raised her hands and prayed that the stipend of Umar would not reach her after that year, and she died. 1

Umar's allocations in the reports

Al-Baladhuri gives several reports of Umar's imposition of the stipend: for the wives of the Prophet twelve thousand dirhams in the report of Ibn Shihab; for the people of Badr five thousand for the emigrants and four for the Ansar; in the report of Mus'ab ibn Sa'd six thousand for the people of Badr and ten thousand for the Mothers of the Believers; and in the report of Qays ibn Abi Hazim five thousand for the people of Badr, of whom five were non-Arabs, among them Tamim al-Dari and Bilal. The figures differ among the reports. 1
