the day of al-Ghars — Ḥuḍayr given command, victory to the Aws, the three-man blood-price

يوم الغرس — رئاسة حضير الكتائب على الأوس والصلح بالتفاضل

c. 610 CE

Medina

Abū Qays ibn al-Aslat, saying no people he led had ever won, gave the Aws leave to choose their own chief: they picked Ḥuḍayr al-Katāʾib ibn al-Simmāk, father of Usayd. At al-Ghars the day went to the Aws. They agreed to settle the dead — excess for blood-price — and the Aws proved ahead by three, so the Khazraj gave three lads as surety for the dīyat; the Aws treacherously killed the hostages 1.

Summary

The Day of al-Ghars was one of the days of the Ansar. Abu Qays ibn al-Aslat told al-Aws that he had never led a people without their being defeated, so they should choose for themselves whomever they wished. They appointed Hudayr al-Kata'ib ibn al-Simak, father of Usayd ibn Hudayr (may God be pleased with him), and the victory that day went to al-Aws. Then they agreed to tally the dead. Al-Aws were three men ahead in the count, so al-Khazraj handed over three boys as pledges against the blood-money. Al-Aws then broke faith and killed them, and that was the spark of the First Fijar. 1

the first Fijār of the Anṣār — the murdered hostages at the gardens

The Khazraj mustered over the three murdered hostages and met the Aws at the gardens — ʿAbdallāh ibn Ubayy leading them against Abū Qays ibn al-Aslat — in a fight so savage they nearly destroyed one another. Named «the Fijār» for the betrayal of the lads, it was the first of that name. Qays ibn al-Khaṭīm, come late with only his sword, fought so well despite grave wounds that his standing was made.
