Medina

A man said he would do no deed after Islam but tend the Sacred Mosque; Ali answered that jihad is better than all of that; the verse of al-Tawba preferring faith and jihad to watering the pilgrims was revealed afterwards, as al-Sallabi reports it under Ali's method of knowing the occasions of revelation (p. 47).

Abu Sufyan's mission to Medina

Frightened by what had been done at al-Watir, Quraysh sent Abu Sufyan ibn Harb to Medina to stiffen the pact and extend its term. The Prophet gave him no answer; Abu Bakr and Umar declined to intercede; Ali advised him to grant protection himself, which he did and returned home empty-handed.
