Deposition of al-Ta'i' and Accession of al-Qadir

خلع الطائع وتولية القادر

c. 991 CE · 381 AH

In 381 al-Ta'i' was seized — for jailing one of Baha' al-Dawla's intimates: the Daylamites dragged him from his throne, wrapped him in a cloak and bore him off while the city shook; they wrote on him his self-deposition for al-Qadir, witnessed by the grandees on 19 Sha'ban. He lived honoured in al-Qadir's house — once complaining when brought a half-burnt candle — till he died on Fitr night 393, al-Qadir praying over him and al-Sharif al-Radi elegising him; he was fiercely set against the Alids, and awe fell so low in his days the poets satirised him 1.

Overview

In 381 AH the caliph al-Ta'i was seized. Al-Suyuti says the reason was that he had imprisoned a man of the intimate circle of Baha' al-Dawla. Baha' al-Dawla came while al-Ta'i was sitting in the portico with a sword girded on, kissed the ground and sat on the chair. His companions advanced and pulled al-Ta'i from his couch, and the Daylam crowded upon him and wrapped him in a cloak. 2

The deposition

Baha' al-Dawla wrote a document deposing al-Ta'i himself and stating that he had handed over the matter to al-Qadir billah, and the notables and nobles bore witness to it. It was on the nineteenth of Sha'ban. Al-Qadir was sent for to attend, and was in al-Bataiha. 2

After the deposition

Al-Ta'i remained honoured in the house of al-Qadir until he died on the night of the Feast of Breaking the Fast in 393 AH. Al-Qadir prayed over him, the notables followed his bier, and al-Sharif al-Radi composed an elegy for him. 2

Al-Suyuti's judgement

Al-Suyuti relates that the awe of the caliphate fell in the days of al-Ta'i, to the point that the poets satirised him, and he describes him as harshly deviant toward the family of Abu Talib. This is al-Suyuti's description. 2

Qarwash al-Uqayli's khutba for al-Hakim at Mosul and Kufa

In Muharram 401 Abu'l-Mani' Qarwash ibn al-Muqallad gathered the people of Mosul, declared obedience to al-Hakim, ruler of Egypt, and established the da'wa for him at Mosul. He then went down to Kufa, al-Mada'in and al-Qasr, where the khutba was read for the Fatimid al-Hakim. The caliphal chancery at Baghdad alleged this, so al-Qadir sent to Amid al-Juyush and Baha al-Dawla, and dispatched to him the judge Abu Bakr al-Baqillani. Baha al-Dawla released a hundred thousand dinars for the army's expenses and wrote to Qarwash with a warning; Qarwash apologised, pledged to remove the matter, and restored the khutba to al-Qadir billah.
