Overview

Al-Ta'i' billah Abu Bakr Abd al-Karim ibn al-Muti', an Abbasid caliph from 363 to 381 AH. 2

The allegiance

He was given the allegiance when his father was stricken with paralysis and his tongue became heavy, on the advice of Subuktakin, the chamberlain of Izz al-Dawla. The matter was settled for him on Wednesday, the thirteenth of Dhu al-Qa'da 363 AH. 2

Ibn al-Athir says that al-Muti' deposed himself, handed the affair to his son, and had the deposition witnessed on that day. He says the length of his caliphate was twenty-nine years and five months. 3

In his time

Al-Dhahabi, as al-Suyuti quotes him, said that al-Muti' and his son were weak under the Buyids. 2 Al-Suyuti says that the caliphate was never weaker in anyone's time than in his, and that no ruler's power was ever stronger than that of Adud al-Dawla. 4

The sources differ on the name of his mother and on whether he was the son of al-Muti' or of al-Mustakfi. This needs an additional source.

al-Qadir bi-llah Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn al-Muqtadir

Abbasid caliph [381–422], Abu'l-Abbas Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn al-Muqtadir, born 336; hailed after al-Ta'i's deposition, arriving 10 Ramadan. Al-Khatib: famed for piety and night-prayer, he studied fiqh under Abu Bishr al-Harawi and wrote an usul book — Companions' virtues and takfir of the Mu'tazila — read every Friday at al-Mahdi's mosque; in Shawwal he and Baha' al-Dawla swore mutual fidelity, the caliph granting him all beyond his gate.
