Summary

Ali ibn Nasr, Abu al-Hasan, titled Muhadhdhib al-Dawla, lord of al-Bataʾih, who was faithful, generous and high-minded. The fearful sought his protection, and kings took refuge with him in times of calamity. He died in the year 409 AH. 1

Sheltering al-Qadir Billah

The greatest of Muhadhdhib al-Dawla's achievements was the arrival of the caliph al-Qadir Billah at al-Bataʾih, where he took refuge for nearly two years when he fled the wrath of al-Taʾiʿ. Muhadhdhib al-Dawla served him and cared for him in the best manner until al-Qadir was summoned to the caliphate. The vizier Abu Shuja said: "The days crowned his splendour with the sojourn of al-Qadir Billah in his protection, and fashioned for him a merit as a lineage, and made it a cause of his deserving praise." 2

Wealth and building

His vast iqtaʿ estates in al-Bataʾih yielded him thousands of kurr of wheat, barley and rice, and hundreds of thousands of dinars. He became related by marriage to King Baha al-Dawla through his daughter, and lent him money in his hardships. He built the Qatiʿa Mosque in Baghdad and water fountains in Wasit for travellers. 3

Qarwash al-Uqayli's khutba for al-Hakim at Mosul and Kufa

In Muharram 401 Abu'l-Mani' Qarwash ibn al-Muqallad gathered the people of Mosul, declared obedience to al-Hakim, ruler of Egypt, and established the da'wa for him at Mosul. He then went down to Kufa, al-Mada'in and al-Qasr, where the khutba was read for the Fatimid al-Hakim. The caliphal chancery at Baghdad alleged this, so al-Qadir sent to Amid al-Juyush and Baha al-Dawla, and dispatched to him the judge Abu Bakr al-Baqillani. Baha al-Dawla released a hundred thousand dinars for the army's expenses and wrote to Qarwash with a warning; Qarwash apologised, pledged to remove the matter, and restored the khutba to al-Qadir billah.
