Summary

In 638 AH al-Malik al-Salih Ismaʿil handed the fortress of al-Shaqif over to the Franks for a purpose of his own, and the Muslims despised him for it 1.

Al-Shaqif, known to the Franks as Beaufort, is a fortress overlooking the Litani River in the district of Tiberias. ʿIzz al-Din Farrukhshah had taken it for the Muslims in 578 AH 2. When al-Salih Ismaʿil handed it over, the scholars' sultan, ʿIzz ibn ʿAbd al-Salam, and Abu ʿAmr ibn al-Hajib objected. He imprisoned both of them and removed Ibn ʿAbd al-Salam from the preaching post in Damascus 1. This is a precedent in the relation between a scholar and his ruler: a preacher was jailed for denouncing the handing over of a fortress to the Franks, so that the pulpits bore witness to the price that the amir paid for his throne.

When Ibn Abd al-Salam was jailed for denouncing the sultan, Ibn al-Hajib entered the prison with him in solidarity; he later moved to Damascus and taught in the Maliki zawiya to crowded pupils.
