Summary

Under the events of 698/1298 al-Nuwayri mentions for the first time — after recording his birth — his recruitment to the diwan al-khass at Cairo and his residence at the Nasiriyya madrasa, inaugurated by al-Malik al-Adil Kitbugha and acquired by al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun on his return to power 1.

The madrasa and its waqf

He describes the Nasiriyya at length and reproduces the text of its waqf, openly criticising its administrator, the tawashi Shuja' al-Din 'Anbar al-Lala, the sultan's tutor, accusing him of embezzlement and demanding he return money owed to the madrasa's staff — boldness the Encyclopaedia of Islam notes among the signs of his self-confidence 2.

Ibn Abbada has al-Nuwayri flogged and confiscates his property, c. 710/1310

Ibn Abbada, the sultan's wakil al-khass, had made al-Nuwayri his deputy at the Nasiriyya, the Mansuriyya and elsewhere, so that he entered upon the sultan and read affairs with him; puffed up by this he spoke loosely of Ibn Abbada, and the sultan did not restrain his denunciation but handed him over to Ibn Abbada and empowered him, who flogged him severely and confiscated his property — and nobody thanked al-Nuwayri for what he had done. Soon after he was sent away to Syria; he does not even hint at this misfortune in his work and mentions only his transfer to Tripoli.
