Ibn Abbada has al-Nuwayri flogged and confiscates his property, c. 710/1310

ابن عبادة يضرب النويري بالمقارع ويصادره، نحو ٧١٠هـ/١٣١٠م

c. 1310 CE · c. 710 AH

Cairo

Ibn Abbada, the sultan's wakil al-khass, had made al-Nuwayri his deputy at the Nasiriyya, the Mansuriyya and elsewhere, so that he entered upon the sultan and read affairs with him; puffed up by this he spoke loosely of Ibn Abbada, and the sultan did not restrain his denunciation but handed him over to Ibn Abbada and empowered him, who flogged him severely and confiscated his property — and nobody thanked al-Nuwayri for what he had done. Soon after he was sent away to Syria; he does not even hint at this misfortune in his work and mentions only his transfer to Tripoli 1 2.

The silent page

Al-Nuwayri never hints at this misfortune in his work, mentioning only his transfer to Tripoli — and to Ibn Abbada, who died that same year, he devoted a dry, brief obituary with more to say about the successor than the deceased 2.

Al-Nuwayri joins the diwan al-khass and resides at the Nasiriyya, 698/1298

For the first time after recording his own birth, al-Nuwayri mentions — under the events of 698/1298 — his recruitment to the diwan al-khass at Cairo and his residence at the Nasiriyya madrasa, inaugurated by al-Malik al-Adil Kitbugha and acquired by al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun on his return to power that year; he describes the institution at length, reproduces the text of its waqf, and openly criticises its administrator, the tawashi Shuja' al-Din 'Anbar al-Lala, accusing him of embezzlement and demanding the staff's due pay.
