Summary
After retiring from administration about 716, al-Nuwayri devoted himself to adab and to composing his encyclopaedia, Nihayat al-Arab fi Funun al-Adab; its earliest volume (vol. 1, p. 16) bears the date 714/1314 1.
A project in five funun
In his introduction he describes the project: having mounted the war-horse of reading and investigation he composed a companion work in five harmoniously ordered funun, divided into sections and chapters. The sole surviving autograph of the first version is volume 19, dated 9 Jumada II 718/8 August 1318; volumes 29 and 30 are dated 725/1325, with additions to 30 made after 728. He modelled the division on al-Watwat's Mabahij al-Fikar, adding history as a fifth fann 1.
