Summary

In 293 AH the Qaramita entered Kufa as people were leaving the Eid al-Adha prayer, with eight hundred horsemen. They shouted "O avengers of al-Husayn!", meaning al-Husayn ibn Zakarawayh, who had been crucified on the bridge, and their slogan was "O Ahmad, O Muhammad", meaning those killed with him. They displayed white banners. They killed those they caught and plundered, and the people hurried into the city and entered it.

About five hundred more of the Qaramita entered after them. The common people pelted them with stones and threw cloth over them until they went out, having lost about twenty men. The episode suggests that hostility toward the Qaramita was not universal among the common people of Kufa, despite the terror they had caused.
