Ali moves the capital to Kufa

36 AH

Kufa

Ali moved the seat of government from Medina to Kufa, because Quraysh would not back him and its factions had scattered among Talha, Aisha and Muawiya; Kufa was a meeting point of peoples, a trade hub and a centre of learning 1. Al-Aqqad calls Kufa the fittest capital for a universal imamate of that age 2.

Al-Aqqad: Kufa as the fittest seat for a universal imamate

Al-Aqqad ties the choice of Kufa to a universal idea of the imamate that gathers peoples, not to tribal loyalty {cite:abqariyyat-ali-aqqad p.127}. This is the author's reading.

Ali burns the village of Zarara where wine was sold

Ali passed a quarter of Kufa called Zarara where meat was sold and wine too, and ordered it set on fire, saying the wicked eat each other; the fire spread from its western side until it reached an orchard. Al-Sallabi takes the report from Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam's Kitab al-Amwal.
