Ali empties the treasury and prays in it

between 656 and 661 CE

Kufa

Ali was told the treasury of the Muslims was full of gold and silver; he went, leaning on the informant, gave all of it away to the people of Kufa until nothing remained, had the place sprinkled, and prayed two rak'as in it. The book reads the act as detachment from worldly goods.

Opinions on the question

The question: Whether emptying the treasury is a sign of detachment, and what the prayer in it means

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi reads the act as an example of rising above worldly goods, and the prayer in the treasury as a sign of the Hereafter's precedence over this world {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 206-207}.

Ali burns people in Kufa who claimed he was God

Ali was told that people at the mosque door called him their lord; he said he was only a servant like them, gave them three days, and when they persisted he lit a fire and burned them. Al-Sallabi cites the report via al-Bukhari, Ibn Abbas's objection that the Prophet forbade punishment by fire, and Ibn Taymiyya's statement that Ali burned most of those who believed in his divinity.
