Ali's pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr

June 632 CE · Rabi' I 11 AH

Medina

Sallabi holds that Ali and al-Zubayr pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr early, on the day of the Prophet ﷺ's death, citing an authentic report of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri; he treats the reports of a long delay as unsound, and records a renewal of the pledge after Fatima's death in Ibn Kathir's view.

Opinions on the question

The question: Did Ali delay his pledge to Abu Bakr, and did the delay signal an objection to his caliphate?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Sallabi's Sunni account: Ali and al-Zubayr pledged early, the reports of delay are weak, and Ali's own words accept Abu Bakr's precedence; Ali renewed the pledge after Fatima's death.
More opinions (1)

Shia (Twelver) viewOther opinion

Reports cited by the book say Ali withdrew from the pledge and that Abu Bakr was chosen without his consent; the book names these as weak or unsound and does not accept them.
