Poetry attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib

Al-Sallabi reports that Ali's critical remarks on poetry and several verses are attributed to him. Ibn Hisham doubted the attribution of the rajaz on building the Prophet ﷺ's mosque, and Nayif Ma'ruf held that the diwan is a mixed collection by admirers; the book answers that narrators gave him verses whose attribution they held to be sound.

Opinions on the question

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi presents the verses that narrators assign to Ali and holds that disputed attributions do not diminish what is firmly attributed to him or his standing in language and letters {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 251}.
More opinions (2)

Academic viewSecondary opinion

As the book reports it: Ibn Hisham questioned the rajaz and suspected it came from a fighter in the Islamic battles; Nayif Ma'ruf judged the diwan a mixed collection. Both are cited second-hand in the book; the originals are not checked here (needs_source).

Other viewOther opinion

Yaqut al-Hamawi reports from Abu Uthman al-Mazini that nothing firmly attributed to Ali exceeds two verses; the book answers this with other narrations {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 251}.

A set of maxims attributed to Ali, collected by al-Sallabi in numbered sayings such as 'the night prayer is a splendour in the day', 'kindness is a treasure', 'the best of people is the one who benefits people', and 'death is the polish of hearts'; the book treats them as one of Ali's tools for teaching, with sermons and poems.
