Overview
Abu Bakr went out with the Muhajirun and the Ansar until he reached Naqa', near Najd, and the Bedouin fled with their families. People spoke to him and said: "Return to Medina, to your offspring and women," and asked him to appoint a man over the army. They did not stop until he went back, and he appointed Khalid ibn al-Walid. 1
The charge to the commander
Abu Bakr said to Khalid: "If they become Muslims and give the zakat, then whoever among you wishes may return." 1
The position of Ali
It is reported from Ibn Umar that Ali ibn Abi Talib took hold of the reins of Abu Bakr's mount and said: "Where to, O successor of the Messenger of God ﷺ? I tell you what the Messenger of God told you on the day of Uhud: sheathe your sword, and do not bereave us of yourself, and return to Medina." 1
Khalid's dispatch
It is reported from Handhala al-Laythi that Abu Bakr sent Khalid and ordered him to fight the people over five things: the two testimonies, the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakat, and the fast of Ramadan. Khalid and those with him set out in Jumada al-Akhira. 1
