Summary
Sha'rawi reads the verse that asks believers to say they believe in what was sent down to them and to the prophets before them (Al Imran 84), and the verse that says that whoever seeks a religion other than Islam will not have it accepted (Al Imran 85). He holds that Islam completes what came before it and does not destroy it 34.
Confirming the earlier messages
Sha'rawi says that belief in earlier messages is part of belief in the final one. The Prophet believed in and confirmed those before him, and nothing after him will ask his community to confirm it. The sound beliefs, reports and stories of earlier religions are present in Islam, to which it added laws suited to every age and place 12.
Islam as general submission
Sha'rawi notes that Islam, in the sense of submission to God, is a description of all the prophets and believers before, and that the complete law sent down to the Prophet is the last to be submitted to. He holds that differences among religions arise from worldly authority and not from the root of the message 54.
The brick
Sha'rawi cites the Prophet's image of a building perfected except for one brick place, where he himself is the brick. In his footnote he attributes the saying to al-Bukhari and Muslim, but its location in the two collections has not yet been verified (needs_source) 16. See The seal of prophethood.
Note on this entry
This is Sha'rawi's reading alone, taken from a scanned copy whose edition is not yet verified, and it is presented under his name. The relationship of Islam to earlier religions has not yet been set out from scholarly sources (needs_source). See also Islam as the shared religion of the prophets and People of the Book.
