Badr as a sign and a lesson

بدر آية وعبرة

Sha'rawi reads the battle of Badr in Al Imran 13 as a visible sign: the believing group fighting for God overcame the disbelieving group fighting for Satan. He holds that God made the two hosts few in each other's eyes before the battle and many during it, that God wanted victory over the armed host and not only the caravan, and that the lesson is for those who see 1 2 3.

Summary

Sha'rawi reads the verse in Al Imran 13 as a visible sign at Badr: the believing group fighting for God overcame the disbelieving group fighting for Satan 2.

Seeing the two hosts

He sets out the readings of "seeing them twice". He holds that the verses of al-Anfal show the enemy made few before the battle and many during it, so that the believers' courage is kindled and the disbelievers' nerve fails 2 4 5.

The caravan and the armed host

He says the believers went out to take the caravan, but God willed victory over the armed host, since a win over the armed is greater than a win over an unguarded caravan 3.

Stories of the companions

He tells stories of Abu Bakr and his son, of Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) and 'Ikrima, and of Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr and his brother Abu 'Aziz, without tracing them to their sources 6 7.

Not yet checked

The stories of the companions and the readings of "seeing" have not been checked against the sira and maghazi books. The academic view and any non-Sunni view have not been checked.

Abraham and the one who argued with him about his Lord

Sha'rawi reads the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord as the agent of the argument, with Abraham as its object. He declines to name him, holds that the vagueness is intended so the lesson applies in every age, and answers those who name him. He reports that Abraham moved the argument from giving life and death to the rising of the sun.
