Nafahat Ramadaniyya 1436 AH: the faults of the tongue (lecture series)

A short Ramadan series by Omar Abdelkafy on the Assabile archive, six surviving episodes that he titles 'the faults of the tongue': reminding people of one's gifts, calling on other than God, praying against oneself and one's children, reviling the Companions, failing to cover a Muslim's fault, and the remedy for the faults of the tongue.

The Assabile archive lists this series among Omar Abdelkafy's audio lessons as 'Nafahat Ramadaniyya 1436 h', with six episodes. 1 In the episodes the Sheikh calls it 'our series of episodes on the faults of the tongue', each episode on one fault, each about thirteen minutes long. 2 3 4 In the last episode he says there were thirty episodes, covering backbiting, talebearing, wrangling, disputation, ingratitude, lying, mockery and more, so the archive holds only part of the series (needs_source: the figure of thirty is stated once). 5 6 The museum's gathering record is the faults of the tongue.

Episode 1: reminding people of one's gifts

The Sheikh opens the series with the fault of reminding people of one's gifts, tells the report of Abu Bakr, Umar and al-Abbas on the best of kindness (hastening, concealing and making little of it), and holds that the worst mann is a son reminding his parents. 7 8 9

Episode 2: calling on other than God

He counts turning in supplication to other than God as a form of shirk, criticises asking the occupants of shrines, and tells examples of certainty from the Companions and Followers, among them Abu Hazim with Harun al-Rashid. Details under supplication. 10 11 12

Episode 3: praying against oneself and one's children

He warns against praying against oneself and one's children, urges praying for guidance for the wrongdoer, and criticises the spread of cursing in everyday speech. 2 13 14

Episode 4: reviling the Companions

He counts reviling the Companions a very grave fault, cites hadiths on their merit, mentions merits of Abu Bakr, Uthman, Ali and Sa'd; his judgement on those who attack them is attributed to him. 15 16 17

Episode 5: covering a Muslim's faults

He treats covering a Muslim's faults and the prohibition of spying, holding that covering helps the sinner repent and that counsel should be private. 18 19 20

Episode 6: the remedy

He gathers the means of guarding the tongue: awe of God's sanctities, short hope, night prayer, silence, good company, knowing one's own faults, and handling anger. 21 22 23
