Summary

«Asdaf al-Lu'lu'» ("Shells of Pearl") is the title under which the Assabile archive keeps thirty filmed episodes featuring Abu Ishaq al-Heweny, each about half an hour long. They are the episodes of a single continuous programme broadcast on the nights of Ramadan: the interviewer says in the first that the programme was recorded before Ramadan to be shown during it, and in the last that this is the thirtieth night. 1 2 The programme is neither lessons nor sermons but a tour of al-Heweny's library in his home and a conversation with him about his scholarly life and his books, as the voice-over of the first episode promises: the books he wrote and those he read, the first thing he wrote, his first sermon, his first published book, the books dearest to him, and the people who shaped his life. 3 4 5 The title «Asdaf al-Lu'lu'» is never spoken in any episode and the interviewer is never named, though al-Heweny mentions a book of his own whose title begins «Lu'lu' al-Asdaf». 6

Each episode opens with the same sung anthem, then a tour of about six minutes along the shelves in which al-Heweny explains the books, their editions and his notes in them, then a seated interview that the interviewer opens with a recap. 7 8 9 The episodes are in broadcast order, and the tour runs on from one to the next: from the room of weak and fabricated hadith and the Companions, to creed with chains and takhrij, to the narrator books and the Sunan, the Musnads, fiqh by school, legal theory, history and tafsir. 8 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 The interview moves in stages: childhood and literary reading, school, university and the beginnings of his studies, the phases of learning and its trials, preaching and the sermon, then his works from the twenty-third episode, and at the close a tribute to his late companion Shukri. 17 18 19

The programme does not state the year of recording, but the interviewer says in the twenty-sixth episode that a visit of his in 1997 was sixteen years earlier, and al-Heweny refers to a note he wrote in Germany in 2010 as past. 20 21 The life story in it is al-Heweny's own account, and its dates and figures are his statements.

The Six Books

The 'six books' of later convention: Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami' al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i and Sunan Ibn Majah — the principal chapter-arranged hadith collections that became the community's widest hadith reference from the fifth century; some lists substitute the Muwatta or the Musnad of Ahmad for Ibn Majah.
