Summary

Al-Qur'an: Muhawala li-Fahm 'Asri ("The Qur'an: an attempt at a contemporary understanding") is a book by Mostafa Mahmoud in which he reads the Qur'an in what he calls a "contemporary" way. 1 The edition read here opens with a preface announcing "the new edition" of the book in the Kitab Mayu series, followed by the chapter "The architecture of the Qur'an". 3 2

The preface: the Qur'an and the sciences of the age (the author's view)

"The architecture of the Qur'an": the first meeting

The author relates that his first meeting with the Qur'an was at the age of four in the Qur'an school of Shaykh Mahmud, repeating after him the opening of Surat al-Duha without understanding a letter; that he received the Qur'anic words "with a completely blank mind" because his family forced neither religion nor study on him; and that the phrases would come back to him of their own accord "as if a living, independent creature". 2

For young visitors

In this book Mostafa Mahmoud tells of his love for the Qur'an since childhood, and tries to link its verses with what modern science has found; this is his view, which some scholars share and others reject.

Al-Hadara al-Nabawiyya: 'The Prophetic Civilisation' (lesson series)

A series of thirty audio episodes by Zaghloul El-Naggar on the Assabile archive, in which he sets out the rules and reasons for the 'scientific miracle' in the Prophet's Sunna, then explains hadith on the earth, the sea, the moon, eclipses, the new moons, medicine, food, sleep, rain, suckling, heredity, the tooth-stick, the tailbone, the joints, dates and the signs of the Hour in the light of what he takes to be scientific fact; all of it is his own account.
