Overview

The day of adha is the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijja, one of the Muslims' two Eids, named for the udhiyya slaughtered on it. 1

Its rulings

The Eid prayer is emphatic sunna for the Malikis and Shafi'is, obligatory on the operative Hanafi view, and a communal obligation for the Hanbalis; takbir is prescribed on the way, within the prayer, and after prayers during the tashriq days. 1 2

The sacrifice

Jurists agree the udhiyya is prescribed on it and differ on its ruling: sunna for the majority, obligatory for the Hanafis. 2

The day's practices

Keeping its night alive in worship and bathing are recommended, as the Prophet ﷺ bathed on the fitr and adha days. 2

Adhan (the call to prayer: its ruling, wording, conditions, recommended features and the muezzin)

In law, the adhan is announcing the time of an obligatory prayer in set, transmitted words. The jurists differ on its ruling, between a communal obligation and a strongly recommended practice, and on its wording, tarjia, tathwib, the conditions of order, continuity and raised voice, and the qualities of the muezzin: Islam, manhood, sanity and discernment.
