Overview
Wasit is a city built by al-Hajjaj in the year 83 or 84 AH. According to al-Baladhuri, he built its mosque, its palace and the green dome in it. 1
It was a land of reeds, and so it was called Wasit of the Reeds (qasab). It is at an equal distance from al-Ahwaz, Basra and Kufa. 1
Al-Hajjaj wrote to Abd al-Malik that he had built a city in a hollow (karsh) of the land between the mountain and the two garrison cities, and so the people of Wasit were called the Karshiyyun. 1
The founding date is given in two versions (83 or 84 AH); an additional source is needed.
