Wathila ibn al-Asqa'

Wathila ibn al-Asqa' ibn Ka'b ibn Amir, of Banu Layth ibn Abd Manat; Ibn Abi Khaythama corrected that he is Wathila ibn Abdullah ibn al-Asqa', traced to his grandfather — and it is said al-Asqa' is an epithet, his name being Abdullah ¹. Al-Waqidi said his kunya is Abu Qursafa; others said Abu al-Asqa' — or Abu Muhammad, Abu al-Khattab and Abu Shaddad ¹.

He became Muslim before Tabuk and witnessed it ¹. Ibn Sa'd said he was of the Suffa people, then settled in Syria; Abu Hatim said he witnessed the conquest of Damascus, Hims and others ¹.

He related from the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Marthad, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) and Umm Salama; from him related his daughter Fasila — or Khusayla — Abu Idris al-Khawlani, Shaddad Abu Ammar, Bishr ibn Ubaydullah, Makhul, Ma'ruf Abu al-Khattab and others ¹.

Ibn Sumay' said he died in Abd al-Malik's caliphate; Isma'il ibn Ayyash dated him from Sa'id ibn Khalid to year eighty-three, adding he was then one hundred sixty-five years old (as printed, checked against the page image); Abu Mash'ar and others said he died in year eighty-five — so al-Waqidi dated him too, adding he was seventy-eight and the last Companion to die at Damascus ¹.
