سويد بن قطب ة الذهلي

سويد بن قطب ة الذهلي

In al-Baladhuri: of Bakr ibn Wa'il, at Basra with a band of his people meaning to do to it what al-Muthanna did to Kufa; Khalid sheltered in his camp at the Ubulla fight, then left him over the district saying 'we have mauled these Persians in your district a mauling that humbles them for you' — per other-than-Abu Mikhnaf, Qutba ibn Qatada al-Dhuhli was there.

Overview

Suwayd ibn Qutba al-Dhahli of Bakr ibn Wa'il; he was at Basra with a band of his people at its conquest. 1

In al-Baladhuri

Al-Baladhuri says he intended to do at Basra what al-Muthanna did at Kufa. Khalid sheltered with him during the battle of Ubulla and then left him in charge of his sector. 1

He transmits from someone other than Abu Mikhnaf that it was Qutba ibn Qatada al-Dhahli who was there. The report differs on the name, and the matter needs an additional source. He is of Bakr ibn Wa'il. 1

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 3812: "Suwayd ibn Qutba al-Wa'ili, mentioned in al-Futuh", and transmits from Abu Isma'il al-Azdi in the conquests of Syria that when Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) arrived at the site of Basra he found there a man called Suwayd ibn Qutba of Banu Bakr ibn Wa'il around whom a band had gathered, and Khalid placed him among his companions. 2

The War of al-Basus

The Basus war, the longest and most storied of the Arabs' days: when the mare-camel Sarab strayed into Kulayb's forbidden spring pasture he shot her udder as threatened, and al-Basus's cry of shame — 'wa-dhalah!' — told her nephew Jasas ibn Murra that honour demanded blood; he speared Kulayb ibn Rabi'a, the Taghlibi lord under whom all Ma'add had united, and Kulayb's brother al-Muhalhil spent forty years exacting the feud between Bakr and Taghlib.
