Overview

Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik, one of the Umayyad caliphs. He succeeded al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik, and his caliphate lasted three years, according to the report of the shaykhs of al-Hasan ibn Hammad 1. He made his son Ayyub his heir apparent 2.

Governors and officials

Sulayman dismissed Khalid ibn Abd Allah al-Qasri from Mecca and appointed Talha ibn Dawud over it, in the year 97 as printed at the top of the page 3.

The campaigns

al-Tabari reports that Sulayman equipped armies in the year 97 3. He sent his brother Maslama ibn Abd al-Malik to Constantinople, and ordered him to remain there until he conquered it, in the year 98 as printed before the paragraph 4. It is said that when he reached Dabiq he vowed to God that he would not turn back until the army he had sent to Constantinople entered it, according to the report 5.

Succession

Sulayman pledged allegiance to his son Ayyub ibn Sulayman and made him heir apparent, in the year 98 as printed at the top of the page 2. When Marwan died he pledged to Ayyub, and he held back from Yazid and lay in wait for him, according to the report 2.

Notes for researchers

  • Reports of the pledge and succession on page 9 have been left out of this entry, because their text is damaged in the OCR. They should be read from the scan before being added.
  • The years 97 and 98 are taken from the printed marginal notes as they appear. They have not been reconciled with the dates on other pages.
  • Most of the reports are "according to the report": al-Tabari transmits them from named narrators. They have not yet been checked against other sources.
  • The references use the scan page number. Reports with OCR damage have been left out.
