c. January 1135 CE · Rabi' I 529 AH

Damascus

Shams al-Muluk Abu al-Fath Ismail ibn Taj al-Muluk Buri ibn Tughtigin; ruled Damascus after his father — majestic, brave, a constant raider who took several fortresses from the Franks, though he besieged his own brother at Baalbek; a tyrant and expropriator, so his mother Zumurrud Khatun arranged for court ladies to kill him in Damascus's citadel in Rabi' I 529 after about three years' rule; succeeded by his brother Mahmud under the atabeg Mu'in al-Din Unur 1.

Summary

Shams al-Muluk Abu'l-Fath Isma'il ibn Taj al-Muluk Buri ibn Tughtakin ruled Damascus after his father. He was full of gravity, famed for courage, much given to raiding the Franks — he took several fortresses from them — and besieged his brother at Baalbek for a time. But he was an unjust, confiscating tyrant, so his mother plotted and a band of his retainers' wives killed him in the citadel of Damascus in Rabi' I 529; his state had lasted about three years. His brother Mahmud succeeded him, and Mu'in al-Din Anar became his atabeg. 1

the Cave of Qasyun (Jibril's Cave)

The mosque raised inside the cave of Mount Qasyun by Abu al-Faraj Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Mu'allim beginning in 370, after a dream in which Jibril bade him build a mosque where God's name would be remembered — he called it Jibril's Cave; a broad prayer-hall floored in white marble, its columns all marble, never empty of the pious at remembrance.
