Summary

Of Ashja', an ally of Banu Salama; he was among the band who mocked the Tabuk army then excused themselves. Ibn Ishaq mentions he renamed himself Abd al-Rahman and asked God to be killed a martyr in a place unknown — and he was killed on the day of al-Yamama and no trace of him was found. 1

In the Tabuk expedition

Ibn Ishaq names him "a man of Ashja', an ally of Banu Salama, called Mukhashin ibn Humayyir". 1 He says the man wished no Quran would descend on them even were each flogged a hundred lashes, and that he afterwards said to the Prophet ﷺ: my name and my father's name have shamed me. 2 And that it is he who was pardoned in the verse — so he renamed himself Abd al-Rahman and asked God to kill him a martyr where none would know his place; he was killed on the day of al-Yamama and no trace of him was found. 3

Tribe

Ibn Ishaq gives his lineage: of Ashja', ally of Banu Salama. 1

Source notes and markers of doubt

  • Ibn Hisham said: "and it is said Mukhashshi" instead of "Mukhashin" (p. 168).
  • Ibn Ishaq's saying that he is the one pardoned in the verse is an interpretation the museum ascribes to him (p. 169).

Battle of al-Musayyakh (12 AH)

The night assault at al-Musayyakh: Khalid timed al-Qa'qa', Abu Layla and 'A'bad to converge on Hudhayl ibn 'Imran's camp in one hour and attacked the sleeping army from three sides. Among the dead were 'Abd al-'Uzza ibn Abi Ruhm and Labid ibn Jarir — two men who had already accepted Islam and carried Abu Bakr's letter confirming it; the caliph paid their blood-money and commended their children, and 'Umar counted their death against Khalid. Hurqus ibn al-Nu'man, who had warned the camp in vain, sat drinking a farewell cup until his head fell into the bowl.
