Summary
Iyas ibn Qabisa al-Ta'i, Kisra's governor over al-Hira after the imprisonment of al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir. He was the commander of the procession in which Kisra's marzbans came, and Banu Shayban defeated them on the day of Dhu Qar 1 2.
The governorship
Kisra appointed Iyas ibn Qabisa al-Ta'i in place of al-Nu'man as governor of al-Hira. He ordered him to send to Hani ibn Mas'ud asking him to hand over what he had. Hani refused and declared war on the king. So Kisra's marzbans and battalions came in Iyas's procession, and the battle of Dhu Qar took place 1. After Iyas, Kisra appointed a Persian governor over al-Hira 3.
The Prophet's birth
The author says that the Prophet was born eight months into Iyas ibn Qabisa's governorship of al-Hira, and that Dhu Qar came shortly after his birth 1.
Notes for researchers
The author's view places Dhu Qar shortly after the Prophet's birth. Other sources place the battle after the mission. The link between Iyas's governorship and the Prophet's birth rests on the author's view alone.
For young visitors
Iyas was a governor appointed by the king of Persia over al-Hira, from the tribe of Tayy. His army was defeated by the people of the desert on the day of Dhu Qar.
