Summary
Ibn Batish, the Shafi'i master; he entered Baghdad, studied fiqh there and heard hadith from Ibn al-Jawzi and others, at Aleppo from Hanbal and at Damascus from many; he taught, gave fatwas, and wrote good works including the Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyya and the Mughni on the rarities of the Muhadhdhab; he was among the leading imams, versed in usul, strong across the sciences — though his Mughni contains many errors, a good share of which al-Nawawi noted in his Tahdhib. 1
