Overview

Al-Malik al-'Adil 'Ali b. al-Sallar the Kurd, then of Egypt — vizier of the Fatimid al-Zafir bi'llah; he came from the governorship of Alexandria to Cairo to seize the vizierate by force, entered and ruled; the vizier Najm al-Din Salim b. Masal fled and gathered the armies, so Ibn al-Sallar equipped a force to fight him — they met at Dalas, Ibn Masal was killed and his head paraded, in 544. 1

His character and murder

Ibn al-Sallar was a Sunni Shafi'i, brave and bold, who built the Salafis a known madrasa — but he was also a stubborn tyrant, oppressive, fierce of arm, hard to deal with. He was the husband of the mother of 'Abbas b. Badis, and Nasr b. 'Abbas killed him on his bed at Cairo in Muharram 549, and 'Abbas took the kingdom. 1

Al-Azhar at Cairo: founded by the Fatimids as the mosque of their da'wa, then turned by the vizier Ya'qub ibn Killis in 378 into a university teaching the sciences and letters — from a pulpit reserved for the Fatimid call into one of Egypt's foremost centres of learning beside the mosques of Amr, Ibn Tulun and al-Hakim.
