    Summary

Diya' al-Din al-Muradi, the imam, exacting hafiz, verifier, master, ascetic — al-Nawawi's shaykh; al-Nawawi mentioned him in his additions to Ibn al-Salah's Tabaqat: 'my eyes never saw his like in his time; he was brilliant in knowing hadith and its sciences and in verifying its wording, especially the two Sahihs, with utmost care — likewise grammar, fiqh and the sufis' lore, a fine discusser in them.' 2

    Al-Nawawi's company

'To me he was among the great travellers on the paths of realities, an excellent teacher; I kept his company some ten years and never saw of him anything disliked. In gentleness he held a high station as far as he could, and in compassion for the Muslims and sincere counsel to them he had few peers.' 2

    Al-Azhar Mosque

Al-Azhar at Cairo: founded by the Fatimids as the mosque of their da'wa, then turned by the vizier Ya'qub ibn Killis in 378 into a university teaching the sciences and letters — from a pulpit reserved for the Fatimid call into one of Egypt's foremost centres of learning beside the mosques of Amr, Ibn Tulun and al-Hakim.
