Handover and departure

He surrendered the Alhambra to the Christians on the second of Rabi al-Awwal 897 AH, on sixty-seven conditions, which they broke afterwards, according to al-Maqqari. He then moved to the Alpujarras, and then went to the Maghrib, where he stayed at Melilla and settled in Fez. 2

In Fez

He built palaces there in the manner of the buildings of al-Andalus, which al-Maqqari saw and entered. He wrote to the Wattasid sultan of Fez a letter called "al-Rawd al-Atir al-Anfas", composed by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Arabi al-Uqayli. He died in Fez in 940 AH and was buried near the musalla outside the Gate of the Law, and left two sons, Yusuf and Ahmad. Al-Maqqari says that in 1027 AH he saw his descendants attached to the endowments of the poor and the needy, and counted among the beggars. 2
