Overview

Abu al-Qasim al-Mu'tamid ala Allah Muhammad ibn Abbad ibn Isma'il al-Lakhmi, the last of the Banu Abbad kings in Seville. Al-Maqqari counts him among the most famous Taifa kings in poetry. 1

The fall of Seville

Al-Maqqari relates from Ibn al-Fath that when the Almoravids entered Seville, he came out to them in the courtyard of the palace and charged them, scattering them until he drove them to the river. He then went back to his palace, where he was taken captive and bound. 1

Captivity at Aghmat

He was imprisoned at Aghmat, where he remained captive. The sources relate verses he said in his fetters and in his prison, among them his address to the chain, and his dialogue with his wife I'timad al-Rumaykiyya. 1

Al-Maqqari says that he asked Hawwa daughter of Tashfin for a tent, and she excused herself, saying she had no tailor, so he said a verse on that. When news of his son Abd al-Jabbar reached Ibn Tashfin, he ordered him weighed down with iron. 1

His grave

He died at Aghmat, and his grave in its cemetery is visited. Lisan al-Din Ibn al-Khatib visited it, and al-Maqqari himself visited it in 1010 AH. 1
