Overview
Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Isma'il al-Jurjani, known as al-Isma'ili. A memoriser and hadith scholar from Jurjan, he was raised in his father's care and sought knowledge from the shaykhs of Jurjan. He combined jurisprudence and hadith and the leadership of religion and of the world, and wrote the "Sahih". His son Abu Sa'id and the jurists of Jurjan took from him. 1
What al-Shirazi relates
Al-Qadi Abu al-Tayyib al-Tabari, al-Shirazi's teacher, said: "I entered Jurjan intending to see him, but he was alive and died before I met him." Al-Shirazi gives his death as "a little over seventy-three hundred", that is about 370 AH. 1
The encyclopaedia gives his birth as 277 AH (890 CE) and his death as 371 AH (981 CE). 2
