Overview

Abd Allah ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, Abu Muhammad, the father of "the Pure Soul" and of Ibrahim. Al-Baladhuri says that al-Mansur imprisoned him on account of his two sons in the Hashimiyya at Kufa, and his grave is there. 1

The call and his meeting with Ja'far al-Sadiq

Al-Mas'udi relates that a letter from Abu Salama came to him calling him to the summons, and he rejoiced at it and rode to Ja'far al-Sadiq. He said that the people wanted his son Muhammad, because he was the Mahdi of this community; Ja'far answered him that he was not its Mahdi, and that if he drew his sword he would be killed. So he went away angry. 2

His imprisonment

Al-Mas'udi says that al-Mansur seized him in 144 AH on his return from pilgrimage, and he was carried with his household from Medina to al-Rabadha, then to Kufa, and they were imprisoned in an underground vault, where they died. When the head of his son Ibrahim reached him, he said some words to al-Rabi' that al-Mas'udi quotes. 3

The uprising of Muhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya and his brother Ibrahim

In year 145 Muhammad and Ibrahim, sons of Abdallah ibn al-Hasan the Hasanid, rose; al-Mansur overcame and killed them with a great company of the Prophet's house. He was the first to sow strife between Abbasids and Alids — hitherto one party — and harmed scholars who joined or sanctioned the rising, killing and flogging: Abu Hanifa, Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja'far and Ibn Ajlan among them. Malik ibn Anas ruled the rising lawful: 'your bay'a was coerced, and there is no oath upon the coerced'.
