Overview
The account
Al-Suyuti says that he asked Ibn Abi Du'ad: did the Prophet know the saying to which they called people, or did he not know it? Ibn Abi Du'ad said: he knew it. He said: then it would have been enough for him not to call people to it, but is it enough for you? They were struck dumb, and al-Wathiq laughed and ordered that he be given three hundred dinars and returned to his land. Al-Suyuti says that al-Wathiq tested no one after that, and that Ibn Abi Du'ad disliked him from that day. 1
The report is from al-Suyuti alone; a second source is needed.
