Overview
In 228 AH the caliph al-Wathiq appointed Ashinas al-Turki as his deputy in the sultanate, and clothed him in two jewelled sashes and a jewelled crown. al-Suyuti says he thinks this was the first time a caliph appointed a sultan, because the Turks had grown numerous only in the days of al-Wathiq's father. 1
