Overview
Ibn Khurradadhbih, in "The Routes and Kingdoms", relates that the caliph al-Wathiq saw in a dream that the Wall of Dhu al-Qarnayn had been breached. He sent Sallam the interpreter to see it. 2
The journey
The caliph equipped him with fifty men, five thousand dinars and two hundred mules carrying food and water. He travelled with letters of introduction from the lord of Armenia to the lord of the Sarir, then to the king of the Lan, then to the king of the Khazars. From the king of the Khazars he travelled about twenty-seven days. 2
What he described
Sallam described a gate of iron whose two leaves were fifty cubits by seventy-five, with a lock that two men could not encircle. He said that the chief of the fortresses struck the lock every Monday and Thursday, and it was heard from behind the gate that there were guardians there. Sallam dictated the account to Ibn Khurradadhbih. 2
Ibn Khurradadhbih does not date the journey. The data places it in the caliphate of al-Wathiq (227–232 AH).
