«بَلى . وَلَكنْ لاَ أدْري مَا تُحْدثُونَ بَعْدي»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
It reached Malik from Abu al-Nadr, client of Umar ibn Ubaydallah, that the Messenger of God ﷺ said of the martyrs of Uhud: I bear witness over these. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) said: are we not, Messenger of God, their brothers? We became Muslim as they did, and we strove as they strove. The Messenger of God said: yes, but I do not know what you will do after me. Abu Bakr wept, then wept again, and said: shall we be living after you? The editor notes that Ibn Abd al-Barr said it is relayed in all Muwatta transmitters, and that its meaning is supported by many sound routes. 1
