Summary
Malik said: the practice among us regarding retaliation among slaves is like the retaliation of free persons: a female slave's soul is for a male slave's soul, and her wound for his wound. If a slave kills another slave deliberately, the master of the slain slave is given the choice: if he wishes, he kills; if he wishes, he takes the blood-money and receives his slave's value. If the master of the killer wishes to pay the price of the slain slave, he does so; if he wishes, he hands over his slave, and beyond that he owes nothing. When the master of the slain slave takes the killer slave and is content with him, he may not kill him. This applies to all retaliation among slaves, in cutting off a hand or foot and the like, as in killing. 1
