Summary
Malik transmits from Dawud ibn al-Husayn, from Waqid ibn Amr ibn Said ibn Muadh, from Mahmud ibn Labid al-Ansari, that when Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) came to Syria, its people complained to him of the sickness and heaviness of the land, and said: nothing will suit us but this drink. Umar said: drink this honey. They said: honey will not suit us. A man from the land said: would you let us set aside some of this drink for you which does not intoxicate? They boiled it until two-thirds went and a third remained. Umar put his finger in it and raised it, and it stretched after it, and he said: this is talaa, like the talaa of camels. He ordered them to drink it. Ubada ibn al-Samit (may God be pleased with him) said to him: by God, you made it lawful. Umar said: no, by God; O God, I do not make lawful for them what I have forbidden them, nor forbid to them what I made lawful for them. 1
