Overview

Judham is a Yemeni tribe that The Sealed Nectar counts among the best-known branches of Kahlan, with Hamdan, Anmar, Tayy, Madhhij, Kinda, Lakhm and al-Azd. 1 The author makes Lakhm and Judham the second group of emigrants from the branches of Kahlan, and notes that among the Lakhmids was Nasr ibn Rabi'a, father of the kings of the Munadhira in al-Hira. 2 3

Not covered here

The Sealed Nectar does not detail Judham's dwellings or their history in the pre-Islamic period. Other sources mention them in the alliance of Heraclius at the battle of Mu'ta (see Mu'ta), among them Farwa ibn Amr al-Judhami.

For young visitors

Judham is a tribe that left Yemen with many other tribes and settled near the lands of Syria.

In Ibn Hisham's biography

Ibn Ishaq relates the expedition of Zayd ibn Haritha against Judham, after Rifa'a ibn Zayd embraced Islam and came to his people with the Prophet ﷺ's letter. Al-Hunayd ibn Aws of Banu al-Dubayb raided Dihya al-Kalbi (may God be pleased with him), and some of the Dubayb rescued what had been taken. Then Zayd came and raided the people at al-Fadafid, killing and taking captives. A delegation of them rode to the Prophet with Rifa'a's letter, and he sent Ali to return what had been taken. 4 5 In the land of Judham is the water of al-Salsal, after which the expedition of Dhat al-Salasil was named. 6

Zayd ibn Haritha's raid on Judham and the Prophet's restitution

When Dihya ibn Khalifa al-Kalbi returned from Caesar, al-Hunayd ibn Us and his son of the Dula' of Judham robbed him in the valley of Shinar; men of the Dubayb, Rifa'a ibn Zayd's clan who had converted, recovered his goods. When Dihya complained to the Prophet and asked for al-Hunayd's blood, the Prophet sent Zayd ibn Haritha with an army, which raided from al-Awlaj at al-Maqis, took property and people, killed al-Hunayd and his son and three others, and captured converts among them. A party of the Dubayb with Hassan ibn Milla rode to Zayd, who had Umm al-Kitab recited and proclaimed their quarter inviolable; they then rode to Rifa'a and three nights on to Medina, where the Prophet read his own letter to Rifa'a, asked three times what he should do about the dead, and sent Ali with his sword to Zayd, who restored everything down to a woman's cushion. Ibn Ishaq has it from men of Judham learned in it.
