Overview
'Uthman dismissed al-Walid b. 'Uqba from Kufa and appointed Sa'id b. al-'As. Al-Walid had been beloved five years, his door without a gate, until Ibn al-Haysaman al-Khuza'i was killed and Abu Shurayh's testimony saw the killers executed at the palace door — which shielded al-Walid. Then witnesses swore he drank wine: some said he led the dawn prayer drunk, prayed four, and asked "shall I give you more?" — Ibn Mas'ud answered "we have had nothing but increase from you today." Brought before 'Uthman, he was flogged forty; 'Ali held back saying the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr had flogged forty and 'Uthman eighty, then ordered his khamisa torn off, and 'Abd Allah b. Ja'far struck the blows 1.
