The verse of private consultation: charity before speaking privately with the Prophet

between 620 and 629 CE

Medina

Ali reports that the Prophet ﷺ told him to order people to give charity before they consulted him privately; he gave a dinar, then half a dinar, then a barley-grain's weight of gold; the Prophet called him frugal and the verse eased the duty, which Ali took as the relief of this community. Al-Sallabi cites al-Tirmidhi, while the book's footnote records al-Albani's weakening of the report (p. 47).

Opinions on the question

The question: Is the report of relief granted through Ali authentic?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi presents the report as the Prophet's own explanation of the verse and counts the relief for the community as due to Ali, citing al-Tirmidhi's grading as hasan gharib (p. 47).
More opinions (1)

Other viewOther opinion

Al-Albani's weakening of the report, as noted in the book's footnote, stands against the Tirmidhi grading; the book records both without choosing between them (p. 47, n. 129).

Abu Sufyan's mission to Medina

Frightened by what had been done at al-Watir, Quraysh sent Abu Sufyan ibn Harb to Medina to stiffen the pact and extend its term. The Prophet gave him no answer; Abu Bakr and Umar declined to intercede; Ali advised him to grant protection himself, which he did and returned home empty-handed.
