Umayya's Khurasan and Bukayr's Killing

ولاية أمية بن عبد الله خراسان وقتل بكير

Khurasan split between Bukayr's party and Bujayr's until its notables wrote Abd al-Malik that only a Qurashi could mend it — Umayya ibn Abdallah ibn Khalid was sent, gave Bukayr Tukharistan then the trans-river campaigns, and planned Bukhara then Musa at Tirmidh. Bukayr raced to Marw, seized Umayya's son, called the people to depose him; forewarned, Umayya truced Bukhara cheaply, took ships Bukayr had burned, returned and fought him, then truced him any district he chose — but hearing he still plotted, had him seized at his house and imprisoned, where Bujayr ibn Waraqa leapt on him and killed him. Umayya campaigned al-Khattl, broken since Sa'id ibn Uthman's sulh, and took it.

Overview

After the strife, Khurasan was divided between two parties, and its notables wrote to Abd al-Malik that the matter would not be right except with a man of Quraysh. He appointed Umayya ibn Abd Allah ibn Khalid over Khurasan, and the dispute ended with the killing of Bukayr ibn Wishah. 1

The governorship

One group was with Bukayr and another with Bujayr. Umayya appointed Bukayr over Tukharistan, then gave him the raiding of Transoxiana. 1

The dispute

Umayya resolved to raid Bukhara and then go to Musa ibn Abd Allah ibn Khazim at Tirmidh. Bukayr returned to Merv, and seized Ibn Umayya and imprisoned him, and called the people to depose Umayya, and they responded. 1

Umayya made peace with the people of Bukhara for a small ransom, and built ships after Bukayr had burned them, then returned and fought Bukayr, then made peace with him. 1

The killing of Bukayr

Umayya learned that Bukayr was still striving to depose him, and ordered him seized if he entered his house. He was seized and ordered imprisoned, and Bujayr ibn Waraqa sprang upon him and killed him. Then Umayya raided al-Khutal, whose people had broken the peace, and took it. 1

The Killing of Abdallah ibn Khazim

Tamim rose at Herat and killed Ibn Khazim's son Muhammad; the father took Uthman ibn Bashir ibn al-Muhtafiz and slew him in cold blood, with a Tamimi. Tamim conspired his deposition — Bujayr ibn Waraqa's party shifted to Abarshahr and renounced him as he sent his baggage with Musa to Tirmidh. Abd al-Malik's writ appointing him arrived; he fed the messenger the letter: 'I could not meet God having broken my bay'a to the son of the Prophet's hawari and given bay'a to the son of his exile'. Abd al-Malik gave it to Bukayr ibn Wishah — who had already deposed him, seized arms and treasury, and won Marw's bay'a. Marching for Tirmidh, Ibn Khazim was overtaken by Bujayr near Marw; Waki' ibn al-Dawraqiyya came out in arms and with Bujayr stabbed him, sat on his chest crying 'for Duwayla's vengeance' — his slain half-brother — as Ibn Khazim spat 'curse you: you kill Mudar's ram for a brother not worth a palm of date-stones', and Waki' answered in verse. His sons Anbasa and Yahya fell with him, his mawla Tahman — grandfather of the Mahdi's secretary Ya'qub ibn Dawud — was wounded; Bukayr sent his head to be displayed at Damascus and his severed right hand to Uthman ibn Bashir's sons.
