Overview
Ibn al-Athir relates that Salah al-Din and his family asked Nur al-Din for permission to send Shams al-Dawla Turanshah to Yemen to attack Abd al-Nabi, lord of Zabid, because he had cut off the Abbasid khutba. Nur al-Din gave permission. 2
The campaign
He mentions that a Yemeni poet called Umara, who was in Egypt, decorated for him the aim of Yemen. He marched from Egypt at the start of Rajab 569 AH to Mecca and then Zabid. Abd al-Nabi came out to him with his army, and the people of Zabid were routed. The Muslims took the city by force and plundered it. 2
Abd al-Nabi and his wife were taken captive, then the Abbasid khutba was set up in Zabid. 2
